  • Joseph Priestley House

    Joseph Priestley House

One of the area’s most famous residents was British theologian, author, and scientist, Joseph Priestley. He is known mostly for his discovery of carbon monoxide and early experiments with electricity. Many of his views were considered controversial; so much so that opposition leaders burned his home in England. He decided to leave his homeland with his family and settle in America. For the last ten years of his life, Priestley spent his time in a spacious home in Northumberland, working on his contributions to science, religion, and education. This home has been placed on both the National Historic Landmark and National Historic Chemical Landmark lists; making the Priestly House a great historical monument in the Northumberland community.
