Historically significant to Pennsylvania and the entire U. S., its history began in 1795. Fueled by the lumber industry, by 1870, Williamsport was home to 18 millionaires, more millionaires per capita than any other city in the world at that time. The wealth of the area over the centuries is showcased by the numerous mansions on what is known as "Millionaires Row" and the spectacular architecture of the buildings constructed during this grand era.
Early settlers/entrepreneurs recognized the need for quality education, and institutions of higher learning. Lycoming College, founded in 1812, and Pennsylvania College of Technology offer a variety of career oriented opportunities, including one of only four course programs for certification in the operation of heavy equipment in the country. The James V. Brown Library has the significance of being the 10th most used library in Pennsylvania. The gift of prominent lumberman James V. Brown, it opened in 1907.
Located along the Susquehanna River, and framed by the scenic foothills of the Appalachian Mountain Range, the Williamsport area is a pleasant place to work and play. Surrounded by state and national forests, the outlying areas are known for fly fishing and hunting, along with winter sports.
U. S. Route 15 passes through Williamsport en route to New York, with I-180 providing access south to Harrisburg, and Route 220 leading to points west, including Lock Haven, home of Lock Haven University and State College, home of Penn State Nittany Lions.
